Few industries face more pressure to evolve than healthcare. Insurance costs continue to climb, access remains a challenge, and patients often wait months for appointments—only to have a limited amount of time with their physician. Providers are doing their best within an incredibly complex system that’s facing enormous hurdles. But it’s also creating an opportunity for healthcare leaders to differentiate themselves.
Is it healthcare—or sick care? What we call healthcare today is largely reactive, built around diagnosing and treating illness after it appears. It is not a system physicians set out to create; rather, it has evolved into one that often rewards volume over outcomes. The default solutions remain in place: build more facilities, prescribe more medications, and add more providers. Meanwhile, people are living longer, but not necessarily better—often managing discomfort, chronic conditions, and diminished quality of life.
A more promising path is beginning to emerge, however—one grounded in prevention and personalization.
On a recent episode of Difference Talks, I spoke with Dr. Jamie Renbarger, Chief of Precision Health at Parkview Health, and Dr. Michael Mirro, Founder of the Mirro Institute for Research and Innovation and Chief Academic Research Officer at Parkview Health. Our conversation centered on genomics, the study of our entire genome (our DNA, including genes and the interactions among them)—and how it offers insight not only into who we are, but into the health risks we are more likely to face.
What makes their work truly distinctive is not just the science, but the accessibility.
Dr. Mirro shared that Parkview is democratizing access to genomic insights by offering DNA testing at no cost. In a world where some pay $50,000 to $200,000 annually for concierge longevity care, Parkview is opening the door for the broader community. The process is simple: a brief blood draw or at-home buccal swab (a painless swab inside a person’s cheek), followed by analysis and results delivered over time. And anyone in the United States can benefit from it.
For most people, the results reveal interesting and sometimes even entertaining traits—how your body processes caffeine or whether you have a predisposition for certain physical characteristics (curly hair or blue eyes, for example). But in approximately two percent of cases, the test identifies a meaningful genetic risk. When that happens, the Parkview Precision Health team reaches out directly to provide guidance and a complimentary consultation.
Beyond risk identification, the insights can also help determine how an individual is likely to respond to specific medications—enabling more personalized, effective treatment decisions. For example, if you take a GLP-1 but are not seeing results, perhaps there are other GLP-1 formulations that will work far more effectively.
Privacy, understandably, is a concern. Parkview addresses this by de-identifying all data, ensuring that individual identities are not tied to genetic information. Instead, it is aggregated with thousands of others to support broader research. I can personally attest to those privacy measures. I took the blood draw (it was all of five minutes) and am totally comfortable with it being confidential, plus I learned some colorful things about me. I have “Inuit Adaptation,” a very rare but harmless genetic trait linked to an ancient metabolic pattern that may have helped Arctic populations survive. (Hey, it’s not earth-shattering, but it’s certainly a unique conversation starter and a fun point of differentiation!)
The larger goal is transformative: to better understand how genetics influence community health and to intervene before disease develops. It challenges the traditional healthcare model by aiming to reduce the need for hospitalizations, medications, and costly interventions. At the same time, it holds potential to address systemic challenges such as rising costs, workforce shortages, and rural hospital closures.
Rather than asking, “How do we treat disease more effectively?” Drs. Renbarger and Mirro are asking a more powerful question: “How do we prevent it altogether?”
That shift in thinking is where true differentiation begins.
Difference-Maker #1: Healthcare or sick care.
Which would you choose? Extending lifespan without improving quality of life is not a meaningful goal.
